When it is worth trying

Humpback whale season in Arraial do Cabo runs from June to September, peaking in July. In 2025 the town opened the season officially on 6 June. The calendar barely changes from year to year, because it follows the animals' migration rather than the tourist calendar.

What the whale watching trip is like

You leave from Praia dos Anjos, the town's natural harbour, on the @e.missmayra boat. Instead of following the line of coves, the boat heads for open water, towards where the groups usually pass, and the day becomes what it always was: looking. Engine low, everyone scanning the horizon, and whoever spots the blow first shouts.

When a group shows up, the boat approaches slowly and shuts down what needs to be shut down. The rest is staying still. An adult humpback reaches 16 metres and around 40 tonnes, and can dive for up to 30 minutes (Projeto Baleia Jubarte) — so the scene is neither fast nor continuous: it disappears, comes back, disappears again.

How it differs from the beach tour

The regular boat tour is a floating beach day: Enseada do Forno with a snorkelling stop, Gruta Azul, Ilha do Farol, barbecue on board. Whale watching is a different animal — more open water, fewer stops, and the point is to find whales rather than to anchor in shallow water.

Three practical differences:

• Route. Less coastline, more horizon.
• Pace. The boat stops where the whales are, not where the itinerary says.
• Expectation. On the beach tour you know what you will see. Here you do not.

The right distance (and why it exists)

Serious whale watching has rules: approach slowly, never cut across the group's path, never separate a mother from her calf, and never push when the animal changes behaviour. It is not red tape — it is what keeps the scene possible next year.

It is worth remembering why that matters here. The western South Atlantic humpback population went from around a thousand animals in the 1980s to somewhere between 25,000 and 30,000 today, which is why it came off Brazil's endangered species list (Projeto Baleia Jubarte). What you see from the boat is a recovery in progress, not a guaranteed show.

What to bring

• A windbreaker. It is winter, and open water is colder than the beach suggests.
• Biodegradable sunscreen. The area is a marine reserve.
• Seasickness tablets, if you are prone to it. Open water moves more than a sheltered cove.
• A camera with zoom, if you have one. Phones capture the moment, rarely the scale.
• Patience. The item that pays off most.
