Arraial do Cabo: The Complete Guide (2026)
Arraial do Cabo is one of the most beautiful towns on the Brazilian coast. And one of the least obvious. The water is cold, the beaches are empty most of the year, and the whales pass right in front every winter. We've lived here since 2019, we run Massambaba Hostel 200 metres from Praia Grande, and we've answered this question guest after guest: where do I start? This guide is the full answer.
What Arraial do Cabo is (and why the water looks like that)
Arraial do Cabo is a small town in the state of Rio de Janeiro, about 170 km from the state capital, within the Região dos Lagos (Lakes Region). It's part of a state Environmental Protection Area (APA), which limits building, preserves the islands, and explains why the beaches still look untouched.
What makes Arraial unique is upwelling: an oceanographic phenomenon in which cold water currents from the deep South Atlantic rise to the surface, carrying nutrients and reducing turbidity. The result: water as cold as 18°C and a clarity with no parallel on the coast of southeastern Brazil. It's cold, yes. But it's that coldness that makes everything look this way.
You'll hear "the Brazilian Caribbean". It isn't quite that: Arraial has no palm-lined coves, no year-round tropical heat and no resort on the sand. What it has is rarer: a preserved coastline, fishermen still working the same beaches, and a beauty that doesn't depend on a filter.
The beaches of Arraial do Cabo
Arraial has eight beaches with completely different personalities. The local logic splits the coast into two sides: the outer side (Praia Grande and Praia Brava), exposed to the open ocean with waves and strong upwelling, and the inner side (Prainha, Praia da Graçainha, Praia do Forno, Praia do Pontal), sheltered and calmer. The complete beaches guide details the conditions of each one.
Praia Grande — outer side
The largest and most accessible beach in town, 200 metres from Massambaba Hostel (a 2-minute walk). A long stretch of sand with good surf when the swell reaches 1.5 m or more. The sunset happens straight off here, towards the open sea. The Deck dos Pescadores (fishermen's deck), at the far end of the beach, is the local crowd's favourite spot to sit and watch. Active artisanal fishing and, for snorkellers, the Imbetiba shipwreck nearby. Heads up: upwelling can drop the water to between 14°C and 18°C on days of strong northeasterly wind.
Praia Brava — outer side
The insiders' beach. Access is via a steep trail with a rocky descent, only doable at very low tide and always with company. That's exactly why it's the least visited and one of the most beautiful. Great for surfing with a light east or northeast wind (up to 8 knots). Less affected by upwelling than Praia Grande.
Prainha — inner side
Emerald-green water, clear bottom, excellent snorkelling straight from the beach. Access by car or on foot. Sheltered from the southwest wind, it's the perfect option when the outer side is rough: it turns into a natural pool. Less good when the northeast wind blows over 18 knots.
Praia da Graçainha — inner side
Small, quiet, and with a secret: it's the best place in town to meet sea turtles without needing a boat. Access on foot, excellent snorkelling straight from the beach. One of the least frequented in Arraial, despite all that quality.
Praia do Forno — inner side
You can arrive by boat or water taxi, or via the roughly 20-minute trail from the hostel. Sheltered, with great snorkelling straight from the beach. On southwest-wind days, while the outer side is rough, here the water is calm and the bottom stays visible.
Praia do Pontal — inner side
Calm, crystalline water, easy access by car, on foot or by Uber (about 10 minutes from the hostel). One of the most relaxed corners of Arraial. Local tip: Paiol do Btico, a beachfront restaurant, serves good fried fish for lunch right on the sand.
Praia dos Anjos
Arraial's natural harbour, about a 15-minute walk from the hostel. The fishing boats come in early in the morning. The Nossa Senhora dos Remédios church, a historic landmark of the town, is here. At night, Praça do Cova becomes a meeting point with food trucks and bars. Bar Farol, on the beachfront, is a laid-back option for a beer.
Pontal do Atalaia (Praia da Escadaria)
Called by many "the most famous beach in Brazil". It sits on the rocky point that separates Prainha from Praia dos Anjos, reachable by boat/water taxi (Marco Táxi) or on foot. The view from the top, with the clear water on one side and the Atlantic on the other, is the most replicated postcard in Arraial. Go early: the morning light is more beautiful and the crowds are still thinner.
Things to do in Arraial do Cabo
The full list of activities is in the things to do in Arraial do Cabo guide. The pillars, though, are these:
Boat tour
It's the must-do in Arraial. Full stop. From the water, the scale changes completely: the cliff of Ilha do Farol looks impossible, Prainha reveals its whole green bottom, and some rock outcrops are home to sea lions. The boat is also where open-water snorkelling happens.
At Massambaba, we go out with @e.missmayra's boat, with snorkelling included in the tour, out with the hostel crew. It's not a resale: it's a direct partner, and the boat leaves from Praia dos Anjos. The route, timings and what to bring are on the boat tour page.
Pontal do Atalaia trail
It climbs a clifftop path with a growing view of the beaches. At the top, the lookout delivers the most classic panoramic photo of Arraial. Go early: the heat builds after 9 am and the path has little shade. Bring water, closed shoes and sunscreen. From June to September, keep an eye on the horizon: whales are routine here.
Sunset at Praia Grande
Arraial has one of the finest sunsets on the Rio de Janeiro coast. Praia Grande is the right place to watch it: the line of the sun slips slowly towards the open sea, staining the water amber. Arrive half an hour early to pick a good spot on the sand. Or head to the Deck dos Pescadores, at the eastern end of the beach.
Snorkelling and diving
Arraial's visibility is exceptional, which draws divers from all over Brazil. For snorkelling on your own, Praia da Graçainha and Prainha are the best options — clear water, turtles at Graçainha, green bottom at Prainha. On the @e.missmayra boat tour, snorkelling happens in open water. For scuba diving, there are local operators with departures to Ilha do Farol and Enseada do Forno.
Humpback whale season in Arraial do Cabo
Between June and September, humpback whales pass along the Arraial coast on their migration route. They come from the South Atlantic, travelling up to 9,000 km in search of warm waters to breed and nurse (Projeto Baleia Jubarte / ICMBio). July is the month of highest concentration: sightings of several groups on the same day are common in that period.
Praia Grande works as a natural lookout. From near the water's edge you can already see a dorsal fin and a breach when the sea is calm. On the @e.missmayra boat tour, the closeness is a whole other story. The skipper knows the sighting spots and changes route when there's a whale in the area.

Best time to visit Arraial do Cabo
The short answer: any time. The honest answer: it depends on what you want.
The water in Arraial is cold all year, and that doesn't change with the season. What changes is the crowds, the price and the extras nature offers:
- January and February: hot summer, busy beaches, high prices, late-afternoon rain. Praia Grande gets quite crowded, especially at weekends. Even so, the water is great.
- March to May: the autumn shoulder, with pleasant temperatures, lower prices and emptier beaches. Excellent for anyone wanting Arraial without the crowds and without the stifling summer heat.
- June to September: winter. Emptier town, affordable prices, dry cold, and the humpback whales passing right in front. It's the favourite time of year for many people who know Arraial well. The sky has a different clarity, the sunset turns golden earlier, and the odds of having a beach to yourself are high.
- October and November: the town wakes up slowly towards summer. A good balance between pleasant weather and still-moderate crowds.
- December: the party restarts. Christmas and New Year tend to pack Arraial. Beautiful and intense, but very crowded.
