How to get to Arraial do Cabo
Arraial do Cabo sits on the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro state, about 170 km from the capital. Getting here is more straightforward than it looks — by plane, bus or car. Here is the honest summary from people who live here and receive guests every weekend.
By plane
The closest airport to Arraial do Cabo is Cabo Frio International Airport (CFB), about 15 minutes by car. It is the most practical option for those flying directly to the region. From there, a taxi or rideshare app handles the last stretch without any fuss.
If you arrive at one of Rio de Janeiro's main airports — Galeão (GIG) or Santos Dumont (SDU) — expect roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by car to Arraial do Cabo, depending on traffic leaving the city. During peak season weekends and public holidays, starting early makes a real difference.
By bus
There are bus services from Rio de Janeiro to Arraial do Cabo or Cabo Frio. Auto Viação 1001 is one of the companies covering this route, with departure from Novo Rio (Rio's main bus terminal) or from select stops in the city centre. The journey takes around 2.5 to 3 hours depending on the time of day and stops along the way.
Passengers arriving at Cabo Frio's bus terminal can take a taxi or rideshare app to Arraial (an extra 20–30 minutes). Those arriving directly at Arraial do Cabo's terminal are already much closer — the hostel is just a short taxi or app ride from there.
By car
Coming from Rio, the most common route is via Via Lagos (RJ-124). The road is good and well signposted — it runs through the Lakes Region municipalities until reaching Cabo Frio, then another 15 minutes to Arraial do Cabo. On Google Maps, simply search for "Massambaba Hostel" and the route comes up directly.
During peak season (December to March, Carnival and July holidays), traffic on Via Lagos can back up significantly on weekends. Leaving before 7 am or after 8 pm usually avoids the worst of it.
From the airport or bus terminal to the hostel
The hostel address is Rua Seu Aureo, 14 — Praia Grande, Arraial do Cabo – RJ. It is 200 m from the beach, in a quiet and easy-to-reach spot.
From Arraial's bus terminal or Cabo Frio airport, a taxi or rideshare app (99, Uber) does the job. The trip from Cabo Frio airport to the hostel usually takes 15 to 20 minutes in normal traffic. From Arraial's terminal, it is under 5 minutes.
