3-day itinerary for Arraial do Cabo
Three days is just right for Arraial do Cabo: enough time to see the beaches without rushing, catch good sea for the boat tour, climb a viewpoint, and still have a spare morning to do nothing at all. This is the plan we put together for people staying with us at Massambaba β tested every week, tuned over time, written the way we'd tell a friend.
Day 1 β Arrival and your first taste of town
The first day is for catching your breath. You arrived, dropped your bag in the room, took a shower β now it's time to wander the town slowly and get a feel for the rhythm of the place.
Praia Grande is 200 metres from the hostel: you can walk there barefoot, no map needed. It's the longest beach in Arraial, with around 2 km of open shoreline and plenty of room even in high season. The water is cold β coastal upwelling keeps it that way all year β but it already sets the tone for what's coming: crystal clear, with a blue that looks edited and isn't.
Early afternoon, follow the shoreline to the Deck dos Pescadores (the fishermen's deck) at the far end of Praia Grande. It's a simple structure over the rocks, with a view that sums up the town's spirit: fishermen coming back with their canoes, kids on the sand, nobody in a hurry. If you feel like getting in the water, get in β the cold is real, but it passes fast. The clarity makes up for any shock.
Late afternoon, the sunset seen from Praia Grande is one of the finest in Arraial. The sun drops straight into the sea, the light turns golden, and everyone on the beach automatically stops to watch. It's not a planned event β it happens every day, and you'll repeat it over the next days without getting tired of it.
For dinner, Restaurante da Zefa and the beach kiosks do the job well, close by and easy on the wallet. Sleep early β tomorrow is the main day. Check the complete guide to the beaches of Arraial to start planning day 3.
Day 2 β Sea day: the boat tour with @e.missmayra
If Arraial has one thing you shouldn't skip, it's the boat tour. And day 2 is the right moment: you've settled into town, you've got energy, and you learned yesterday that the sea here is a different animal.
The tour usually leaves early β between 8 and 9 am, depending on sea conditions. The route covers the main stops: Ilha do Farol (Arraial's postcard beach, with that very fine sand and shallow turquoise water), the Gruta Azul (a glow of water that looks almost neon, inside a rock formation), Prainha (the snorkelling stop, with plenty of marine life below) and, when the sea allows, Praia do Forno. About five hours in total.
At Massambaba, the boat is @e.missmayra's, with snorkelling included β no resale, no queue, out with the hostel crew. The snorkelling stop at Prainha is the highlight for most people: the water is cold, but within seconds you forget. Down below there are squid, octopus, colourful fish and, sometimes, turtles. More on the route and what to expect is on the boat tour page.
One important tip: bring biodegradable sunscreen. At Ilha do Farol and in the snorkelling areas, conventional sunscreen is banned β and it makes sense, since all that clarity depends on water quality. Put it on before you leave and let it absorb well.
What to bring: water, a light snack, swimwear, a towel, biodegradable sunscreen and a willingness to face the cold. If the weather turns and the sea is rough, we don't go out β simple as that. So: keep day 2 completely free, with no afternoon commitments. If the boat goes out in the morning, the rest of the day is yours to explore the town or head back to Praia Grande.
Day 3 β Trails, viewpoints and the right way to leave
The last day is for seeing the town from above. Wake up early β the morning light at Pontal do Atalaia is different from the midday one β and head straight there.
Pontal do Atalaia has a wooden stairway of 225 steps that drops down the cliff to the little beaches below. Seen from up top, Arraial looks small: the blue of the sea fills everything, the lighthouse in the distance, Praia Grande on one side, the open ocean on the other. From June to September, this spot is also one of the best in Arraial for spotting humpback whales on their migratory route β it's not guaranteed, but those who arrive early have better odds, and the view is worth it on its own.
Down the stairway, the little beaches below have calm, shallow water β good for one last self-guided snorkel with no special gear. From here, a taxi or a walk takes you to Prainha, another snorkelling option in a spot more sheltered by the rocks.
On the way back, pass by Praia dos Anjos. It's Arraial's natural harbour, where the fishermen gather early in the morning and where the tour boats leave from. Visually more low-key than the other beaches, but full of movement and real town life β worth a ten-minute walk if you want to understand how Arraial works day to day.
If there's time left in the late afternoon, head back to Praia Grande. One last time with your feet in the sand before you go β no guilt about sitting still. More ideas are in the things to do in Arraial do Cabo guide.
Practical tips for the itinerary
- Book the boat in advance: message us on WhatsApp as soon as you confirm your stay. The tour depends on the sea, but securing a spot avoids missing out on high-demand days.
- Best time: the itinerary works all year, but MarchβApril (post-Carnival) has the perfect balance β emptier town, lower prices, clearer water. From June to September, humpback whales are the cherry on top. See the best time to visit Arraial.
- Do I need a car? No. Praia Grande is 200 m from the hostel, and Pontal do Atalaia is about 10 minutes by taxi or ride app. The boat leaves from Praia dos Anjos, a 15-minute walk. A car adds flexibility, but it isn't necessary for this itinerary.
- Biodegradable sunscreen: required at Ilha do Farol and recommended on every beach in Arraial. Buy it before you arrive or ask at reception.
- Getting here: Cabo Frio airport (CFB) is 15 minutes away by car. Everything about flights, buses and driving is in the how to get to Arraial do Cabo guide.
- Flexibility is everything: don't force the boat if the sea looks bad. A tour on rough seas doesn't do justice to what Arraial has to offer β and good sea usually shows up right after.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to book the boat tour in advance?
- Yes. The boat has limited capacity and goes out only with hostel guests. Book it over WhatsApp as soon as you confirm your stay β especially in high season. Snorkelling is included at no extra cost for Massambaba guests.
- When is the best time to do this itinerary?
- March to April (right after Carnival): emptier town, lower prices, clearer water. June to September: the chance to spot humpback whales at Pontal do Atalaia. The itinerary works all year round β these windows offer the best balance of experience and cost.
- Can I do it in 2 days?
- You can, but it gets tight. In 2 days you can fit Praia Grande, the boat tour and one viewpoint. The problem is the margin for error: if the sea is rough and the boat has to be postponed to the next day, there's no day 3 to fall back on. Three days is the safer bet.
- Do I need a car in Arraial do Cabo for this itinerary?
- No. Praia Grande is 200 m from the hostel. Pontal do Atalaia is about 10 minutes by taxi. The boat leaves from Praia dos Anjos, a 15-minute walk from Praia Grande. A car adds flexibility, but it isn't necessary for this particular itinerary.
Where to stay
This itinerary gets a lot easier with a good base. Massambaba is 200 m from Praia Grande, with homemade breakfast included, 100% solar energy and the @e.missmayra boat leaving from the door. It's the kind of place that shortens the distance to everything above. Check the rooms and prices.
