Boat or beach? How to pick the right day in Arraial do Cabo

The wind runs the day

Arraial do Cabo has two sides. The outer side — Praia Grande, Praia Brava — faces the open sea. The inner side — Prainha, Praia do Forno, Praia do Pontal — sits sheltered behind town. Neither is better than the other: they take turns depending on the wind.

The rule we use fits in three boxes:

When the boat wins

The boat wins when the sea is flat and visibility is good — usually with light NE wind, or in the early hours before the wind picks up. It is the only way to do in one day what would take three from land.

Our private tour stops at Ilha do Farol, the Gruta Azul, the Prainhas do Pontal do Atalaia and Praia do Forno, boarding at Marina dos Pescadores. The boat is @e.missmayra and the trip is private: your group only, never shared with a tour crowd.

Two things worth knowing: the Navy closes the sea whenever conditions are not safe, and on those days no boat goes out — ours or anyone else's. When the beach wins (and which one)

Windy day, closed sea, or a day when you just want to walk: the beach wins. The question becomes which.

• Praia Grande — 200 metres from the hostel, our backyard. Best with easterly wind; with swell over 1.5 m it turns into a surf beach.
• Prainha, Forno and Pontal — the inner side. With SW wind they go glassy. Forno has good snorkelling straight off the sand.
• Graçainha — our pick for snorkelling without a boat. Walk-in access, and the best odds of meeting a sea turtle.
• Pontal do Atalaia — the most famous beach in town. Go early: the crowd and the flat light arrive together after 10am.
• Praia Brava — a trail with a rock scramble, only at low tide and never alone. Not an improvised outing.

Cold water is not a flaw

At some point you will reach Praia Grande on a 30 °C day and find the water at 16 °C. That is not bad luck: it is upwelling, the phenomenon Arraial is famous for. Wind pushes the warm surface water away from the coast and cold, nutrient-rich water rises from the bottom to replace it.

It is what holds up everything else: the clear water, the marine life, the Brazilian Caribbean nickname. The price is the cold shock — which lasts about a minute.

A 3-day plan that survives a change in weather

A fixed plan breaks at the first cold front. What works here is a plan with slack:

• Day 1 — arrival and reconnaissance. Praia Grande on foot, sunset from the backyard. Nothing booked.
• Day 2 — the wildcard. Hold it for the boat, but only confirm the evening before, reading the forecast. If the sea closes, it becomes an inner-side day.
• Day 3 — whatever is left. Pontal do Atalaia early, or snorkelling at Graçainha, or the Praia Brava trail if the tide agrees.
